Soft to Medium Soft Formations


The TR52 design for efficient drilling of soft to medium formations such as shale, red bed, limestone, and other strata of low compressive strength with hard streaks or abrasive properties. This design employs a maximum offset and features all chisel-shaped tungsten carbide inserts which are spaced slightly farther apart than normal to ensure the highest possible rate of penetration. Ample hard facing on the shirttail provides maximum protection against abrasion and ensures the longest possible bearing life. Suggested operating weights are 1,000 to 3,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter, with corresponding rotary speeds of 200 to 50 RPM.

TR53

Medium Soft Formations


The TR53 design utilizes the same cone structure as the TR52, but with all conical-shaped inserts for efficient drilling in medium soft formations such as shale, sandstone, and alluvial deposits. This design employs the same maximum offset as the TR52; however, the conical-shaped inserts provide greater wear resistance in the harder formations for which the bit is designed to drill. Ample hard facing is applied to the shirttail, providing maximum protection against abrasion and ensures the longest possible bearing life. The most effective weight range varies from 1,500 to 5,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter, while rotary speeds of 175 to 50 RPM give best performance. Rotary speed should be decreased as weight is increased.

Medium Hard Formations


The TR63 is designed for medium hard formations that are semi-abrasive such as hard, sandy limestone, shale, dolomite, and limestone with cherty streaks. This design features conical-shaped tungsten carbide inserts on the gage rows to inhibit gage wear and chisel-shaped inserts on the inner rows for maximum penetration. Gouging/scraping action is provided by cone offset. Ample hard facing on the shirttail provides maximum protection against abrasion and ensures the longest possible bearing life. Suggested operating weights are 1,500 to 6,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter, with corresponding rotary speeds of 140 to 55 RPM. Near the bit stabilization is recommended for maximum bit life.

The TR64 is similar to the TR63, but with dome-shaped tungsten carbide inserts on the gage rows and chisel-shaped inserts on the inner rows for best performance in tight and well-cemented medium hard to hard formations such as abrasive limestone, sandstone, and dolomite where maximum gage wear resistance is required. Ample hard facing is applied to the shirttail, providing maximum protection against abrasion and ensures the longest possible bearing life. Suggested operating weights are 1,500 to 6,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter, while rotary speeds of 140 to 55 RPM give best performance. Rotary speed should be decreased as the weight is increased. Near the bit stabilization is also recommended for maximum bit life.

TR74

Medium Hard to Hard Formations


The TR74 features a minimum offset cutting structure design and all dome-shaped tungsten carbide inserts. It is designed to drill hard and abrasive formations such as quartzite, granite, cherty iron ores, and copper porphyry. As with other bit designs, this design features shirttail hard facing for maximum resistance to bearing wear. The drilling weights should range from 1,500 to 8,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter. As drilling weights are increased the rotational speed, which ranges from 120 to 50 RPM, should be decreased. Near the bit stabilization is highly recommended for maximum bit life, and pull down drills should be equipped with shock absorbers.

Soft to Medium Formations


The TR3 is the fastest drilling bit. This bit model is designed with long "A" shaped teeth, widely spaced and fully hardfaced from crest to root for maximum penetration rates in formations that range from moderately soft to medium soft. This design is most effective in formations with compressive strengths under 5,000, such as shale, clay, red bed, medium limestone, and unconsolidated formations. The TR3 also features the absence of deletions on the gage side of teeth on the heel row of the number two cone. This ensures maximum gage life along with tooth life in more abrasive formations. Effective operating weights are from 1,000 to 3,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter, with corresponding rotary speeds of 200 to 50 RPM.

Medium to Medium Hard Formations


The TR2 offers the combination action of chipping, crushing, and gouging/scraping provided because of reduced cutter offset. The teeth are shorter "A" shaped and more closely spaced teeth than those of bits designed for softer formations. Long crests in the outer row teeth have self-sharpening hardfacing applied for maximum penetration and longer bit life. This design will most economically drill medium and medium hard formations and was designed to replace the softer formation bits in strata where shale alternates with streaks of limestone and sandstone or where gypsum tends to ball up between the teeth. The most effective weight range varies from 1,000 to 5,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter, while rotary speeds of 150 to 50 RPM give best performance. Rotary speed should be decreased as weight is increased.

Medium Hard to Hard Formations


The TR1T operates best in hard, abrasive formations such as hard sandy limestone, limestone interspersed with cherty streaks, broken shale, dolomite, granite, and abrasive sand. This bit is especially constructed to withstand the stresses imposed in drilling hard formations under heavy weights. The gage teeth are "T" shaped and hard faced with tungsten carbide. There are no interruptions on the heel row teeth, and the inner row teeth are short and closely spaced for maximum strength.

Other features include balanced bearing design and extra thick cone shells. The most economical bit performance is obtained with weights of 3,000 to 8,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter. Corresponding rotary speed should range between 100 and 40 RPM. It is a recommended practice that the rotation speed should decrease when increasing drilling weight.

Very Hard Formations


Hard, abrasive formations requiring maximum resistance to gage wear are best drilled with the TR1H bit. The bit provides the necessary chipping and crushing action on bottom and drills efficiently in formations such as siliceous limestone, dolomite, sandstone, and granite. The gage surfaces of the cones have webs joining adjacent heel teeth, which ensures great resistance to wear. Inner row teeth are short and closely spaced to withstand maximum stress. This bit is designed to drill most efficiently in hard formations with weights ranging from 3,000 to 8,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter. Rotary speeds should decrease from 100 to 40 RPM as weight is increased.

Sealed Roller Bearing Bits

Sealed roller bearing bits
Sealed roller bearing bits are used in a variety of applications where, historically, bearing life has been the limiting factor in bit performance. Sealed roller bearing bits, available in both steel tooth and tungsten carbide designs, offer extended bearing life to utilize the full life of the cutting structure.

The lubrication system for sealed roller bearing bits consists of a grease reservoir with passages to the bearings, a synthetic rubber diaphragm, and a steel reservoir cap. The lubrication system equalizes the internal and external pressure across the seal, which serves to increase seal life. A special factory applied lubricant fills the bearing area, and the grease reservoir in the leg of the bit supplies additional grease to the bearings as needed.

The bearings are sealed using specially designed "O" Ring seals, made of Highly Saturated Nitrile (HSN) for maximum bearing protection and life. These seals are very effective in preventing the intrusion of the drilling fluid into the bearing system.
